Andrew Avent is Rahway’s Union County Conference Male Athlete of the Week.
Avent, a three-year starter on the Rahway High football team at the running back and linebacker positions, is a relentless performer on both sides of the ball.
Last Saturday was a record-setting day for Rahway senior running back Andrew Avent as he eclipsed Rahway’s single-season rushing record, career rushing record, as well as career scoring record, which stood for 58 years. Avent ran for 230 yards on just 9 carries and scored 4 touchdowns in a 41-6 victory over New Brunswick, which put him over the 4,000-yard threshold and into the record books as Rahway High School’s all-time leading rusher.
Avent broke the single-season rushing record of 1,515 set by Harold “Butchie” Young in 1981, the career touchdown mark of 51 established by Joe Williams from 1956-58, and Williams’ career points standard of 318. Avent now has 1,520 rushing yards this season, 54 career TDs and 330 points to go along with his 4,083 yards.
Currently, Avent sits as the number one rusher in the state of New Jersey with 1,530 rushing yards as Rahway prepares for a clash with Montgomery High School, a contest that has Liberty Silver Division Championship implications on Friday night at 7 pm at Madden Field. Avent has been a four-year starter for the Indians as running back, linebacker, and punter.
As a co-captain and leader on defense, Avent has registered a team-high 10 tackles per game. He also serves as the punter for the Rahway Indians, averaging 38 yards per punt.
