Defending champion New Providence and Westfield will clash in the Union County Girls Basketball Tournament final for the second straight year after both advanced with semifinal victories on Wednesday in Rahway.

Top-seeded New Providence, who defeated Elizabeth in the semifinal, and second-seeded Westfield, who advanced with a victory over Roselle Catholic, will meet in the final this Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kean University.

WESTIFLED 71, ELIZABETH 38

Second-seeded Westfield overpowered sixth-seeded Elizabeth on its way to a 71-38 victory in the Union County tournament semifinals, in Rahway.

Westfield (18-5) came out hot and set the tone early as it took a 26-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Blue Devils’ offense continued to roll into the second and third quarters, as it scored 27 more points and led 53-30 going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth the Blue Devils closed the game on an 18-8 run to clinch a spot in the county finals and its sixth straight victory.

For Elizabeth (22-2), Alexandra Koon led with 12 points and Damani Anderson added 11 points.

Westfield will play in the finals on Sunday afternoon at Kean University against top-seeded and No. 9 New Providence.

No. 9 NEW PROVIDENCE 48, ROSELLE CATHOLIC 44

Top-seeded New Providence snuck past fifth-seeded Roselle Catholic for a 48-44 victory in the Union County tournament semifinals, in Rahway.

New Providence, No. 9 in the NJ.com Top 20, ran its win streak to 13 games and improved its record to 21-3.

The Pioneers, who split its two games with Westfield, suffered their last loss to Westfield on Jan. 12.
