Senior pole vault star Joe Alves has been selected as Elizabeth’s Union County Conference Boys Athlete of the Wee

Alves made history by becoming the first Union County indoor champion in the pole vault in Elizabeth history by clearing 12-0.

Alves has been a member of the track and field program since his freshman year when he started as a long-distance runner. He became a vaulter during his sophomore year when the head coach asked if anyone would learn it to help the team. Since then, he has been a valuable member of the program, finishing his junior year in the top six in the Union County Conference and Union County.

This season, Alves and teammate Pablo Guillen placed third in the 2-man pole vault at the State Group IV Relays, the highest ever placing in school history. Alves is also a high-level academic student with aspirations of attending an Ivy League university next fall.
