The Westfield High School girls basketball team proved in Wednesday night’s Union County Tournament semifinals victory over second-seeded New Providence that the old adage about how hard it is to beat a team three times in a season can certainly hold true after the Blue Devils had dropped a pair of regular-season meetings with the Pioneers.

Friday night in the UCT final, third-seeded Westfield tried to apply the same karma to the top-seeded Patrick School, a club the Blue Devils also had fallen to twice during the regular season. And while they certainly showed plenty of heart, hustle, desire and bursts of momentum, the Celtics proved too much to overcome, as Westfield fell, 51-41, at Kean University.
